A Name on the Map of India

Few figures in modern Indian history have lent their name to as many institutions, neighbourhoods, and landmarks as Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya (1861–1946). Across India today, "Malaviya" and "Malviya" mark universities, engineering institutes, city districts, metro stations, bridges, and public squares. The map itself records the breadth of his contribution to Indian public life.

The University He Built

The institution most closely associated with Malaviya is the one he built himself: Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. Founded in 1916 under the Banaras Hindu University Act of 1915, BHU was Malaviya's grandest project, realised with the support of co-founders and patrons including Annie Besant, Maharaja Rameshwar Singh of Darbhanga, and members of the Narayan dynasty of Benares. The university incorporated the Central Hindu College that Besant had founded in 1898, and grew into a collegiate, central, and research university often described as India's first central university.

Malaviya Bhawan and the Campus Memorials

Within the BHU campus, Malaviya's memory is kept in physical form. Malaviya Bhawan, his former residence, was opened to the public as a memorial in 1961 during his centenary year; it now houses centres devoted to his life and ideals, including the Yoga Sadhana Kendra, the Geeta Samiti, the Malaviya Adhyayan Sansthan, and the Malaviya Centre for Value Studies. That same centenary year, a life-size statue of Malaviya was unveiled in front of the university's main gate, and it remains one of the campus's best-known landmarks. Decades later, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a further statue of Malaviya at BHU, together with murals depicting the Varanasi ghats, during a visit to the university.

Beyond the campus, a life-size portrait of Malaviya hangs in the Central Hall of India's Parliament, and the Malaviya Smriti Bhawan, a national memorial in Delhi, was inaugurated in 2008.

Universities of Technology

MNIT Jaipur

The Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT) in Jaipur, Rajasthan, was established in 1963 as Malaviya Regional Engineering College, a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Rajasthan. It began with just two engineering branches. On 26 June 2002 it was granted National Institute of Technology status, taking its present name, and on 15 August 2007 it was recognised as an Institute of National Importance through an Act of Parliament. Today it comprises fourteen departments, a school of management, and various research centres. It remains a point of pride for Jaipur and for Rajasthan, as described on our Rajasthan page.

MMMUT Gorakhpur

In eastern Uttar Pradesh, the Madan Mohan Malaviya University of Technology (MMMUT) in Gorakhpur traces its origins to the Madan Mohan Malaviya Engineering College, founded in 1962. In September 2013, through the Uttar Pradesh Madan Mohan Malaviya University of Technology Act, the college was upgraded into a state technical university offering undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes.

The Malaviya Mission for Teachers

Malaviya's name also anchors a national programme for educators. On Teachers' Day, 5 September 2023, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan launched the Malaviya Mission – Teacher Training Programme at Kaushal Bhawan in New Delhi. Organised by the University Grants Commission with the Ministry of Education, the programme builds capacity among higher-education faculty through a network of Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Centres, many of them former UGC Human Resource Development Centres. Its themes range from Indian Knowledge Systems and academic leadership to research and inclusive education, aligned with the National Education Policy 2020.

Malviya Nagar, City by City

"Malviya Nagar", literally Malviya Town, appears on the maps of numerous Indian cities. Neighbourhoods named after Malaviya are recorded in Allahabad (Prayagraj), Lucknow, Delhi, Dehradun, Bhopal, Durg, and Jaipur.

Delhi

The best-known Malviya Nagar is the residential locality in South Delhi, bounded by Panchsheel Enclave, Sheikh Sarai, Saket, and Hauz Khas. It has its own Malviya Nagar metro station on the Yellow Line of the Delhi Metro, inaugurated on 3 September 2010 as part of the Central Secretariat–Qutub Minar extension.

Jaipur

Malviya Nagar in south Jaipur is named after Malaviya and also lends its name to a constituency of Jaipur district. MNIT Jaipur stands in the same part of the city, making the name doubly present in Rajasthan's capital.

Bhopal

Malviya Nagar in central Bhopal lies near T.T. Nagar and the old Vidhan Sabha area, putting the name at the administrative heart of Madhya Pradesh, the state that contains the Malwa region itself.

Indore

Malviya Nagar in Indore is a planned colony developed by the Indore Development Authority, organised in six sectors from A to F, in the largest city of the Malwa plateau.

Bridges, Squares, and Hostels

The Malviya Bridge at Varanasi

Perhaps the most striking piece of infrastructure bearing the name is the Malviya Bridge at Varanasi, a double-decker rail-cum-road bridge across the Ganga. It opened in 1887 as the Dufferin Bridge, built by engineers of the Oudh and Rohilkhand Railway with seven spans of 350 feet and nine spans of 110 feet, carrying railway track on its lower deck and a roadway on its upper deck. Because it stands near Rajghat, locals also call it the Rajghat bridge. In 1948, two years after Malaviya's death, the bridge was renamed in his honour, in the city where he had built his university.

Malaviya Chowk and the Campus Bhawans

The Malaviya name marks smaller urban spaces as well. Malaviya Chowk in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, is a busy square and commercial market area. On campuses across India, student hostels called Malaviya Bhawan stand at IIT Kharagpur, the IIT Roorkee Saharanpur campus, and the Pilani and Hyderabad campuses of BITS Pilani. Every year, thousands of students who have never seen Varanasi live in a building carrying the educationist's name.

On India's stamps

India Post has twice commemorated Malaviya: a birth-centenary stamp released around 25 December 1961, printed at the India Security Press, Nasik, and a second stamp issued on 27 December 2011 for his 150th birth anniversary.
