Malviya (Malaviya) is a toponymic surname from central India: it literally means "those from Malwa", the volcanic plateau of western Madhya Pradesh and south-eastern Rajasthan whose ancient capital was Ujjain. The region itself is named for the Malavas, a tribe that resisted Alexander's army in the fourth century BCE and whose era became the Vikram Samvat calendar. As families left Malwa over the centuries — Brahmin families to the Gangetic plains, Jat and Balai families across Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh — their origin became their name. Today the surname is carried by many communities, and by figures ranging from Bharat Ratna Madan Mohan Malaviya to the CEO of Penguin Random House.
